From the CDC's info on HIV and mpox

Currently, the CDC reports that " People with HIV are over-represented in current mpox cases. We do not know if having HIV increases the likelihood of getting infected with monkeypox virus (MPXV) if exposed, however, we do know that people with advanced HIV (immunocompromised) are at increased risk of severe mpox and death if they get mpox."

People with HIV should follow the same recommendations as everyone else to protect themselves from mpox.

• Mpox vaccine PEP is when you get the mpox vaccine to reduce your chances of getting mpox after a possible exposure to MPXV.
• Talk to a healthcare provider to learn if the mpox vaccine is recommended for you.
• Avoid close contact with people who have a rash that looks like mpox and animals that can carry the virus.
• Don't use objects or materials a person with mpox has used.
• Wash hands often and learn steps to lower your risk of mpox during sex or at social gatherings.

JYNENNOS, the vaccine for mpox, is available in Philadelphia for anyone that believes they are likely to be exposed to mpox. This is a two-dose vaccine. After the first dose, you will wait 4 weeks until you can take your second dose. You will have maximum protection 2 weeks after your second dose.

The CDC recommends that you get the vaccine if you...

• Are a gay, bisexual, or other same-gender loving man who has sex with men or are transgender, gender non-binary, or gender-diverse AND in the last 6 months you have had, or expect to have
  • One or more sexually transmitted infections
  • More than one sexual partner, or anonymous sexual or intimate contact
  • Sex at a commercial sex venue
  • Sex in association with a large public event in a geographic area where mpox transmission is occurring

• Have had sexual or intimate contact with a person who is at risk of mpox as described above

• Have had sexual or intimate contact with someone who may have mpox. Get vaccinated as soon as possible after exposure, regardless of your sexual or gender identity.

The Positive Committee created these brochures for people living with HIV/AIDS in the Philadelphia EMA. The content is the same in all version of the brochure, although three of them have different cover images. There is also a Spanish version.
